If Dogs Could Speak What Would They Say?
There once was a family of four plus two dogs. They lived in a small apartment in Westchase, Tampa FL that overlooked a beautiful pool with a bridge. There were the parents, Tonya and Nick and their two lovely twin daughters, Laura and Kelly. Laura and Kelly each had a dog of there own, Fluffy a lazy Papillion/Shitzu mix belonged to Laura and Sparky a hyper beagle/Jack Russell mix belonged to Kelly. They rescued the two mutts from a small no-kill shelter about an hour away.
One Friday afternoon Kelly, Tonya, and Laura went grocery shopping. They bought the usual 2% milk, dog food (wet and dry) free range eggs, whole wheat bread, American cheese, and so on, but there was something different with the dog food they bought. It was the same Purina mighty dog cans they always buy, but they didn’t realize that there was a recall on most dog foods including the cans they just bought. Everything was fine at first the dogs ate the food and nothing strange happened.
Saturday morning Kelly was the first to awake as usual but it was because she heard someone talking. She looked around but there was no one there but her and Sparky. It wasn’t a loud talking but a light whisper. She looked around once more and saw Sparky’s mouth slightly moving. She nudged Sparky to see if he would wake up and sure enough he happily jumped up. Kelly said good morning and scratched under his ear in his favorite spot. That’s when she heard the voice again but this time louder and it said thank you. She stood up and looked around then said to Sparky did you hear that, expecting no reply as usual because everyone knows dogs don’t talk. Sparky looked right at Kelly and said, “Hear what?” Kelly jumped back astonished. She removed the baby gate and shut her door so she wouldn’t wake the rest of the family.
She sat next to Sparky on the bed and hesitated to say anything but finally said “Did you say something?” Sparky didn’t reply so Kelly asked again. “Did you say something Sparky?” This time Sparky said “I don’t know did you hear something?” Kelly stood up and said “you spoke, you actually said something!” Not amazed Sparky said “you can hear me?” Kelly, speechless nodded her head yes. Kelly sat on the floor next to the bed and patted the floor. Sparky jumped down from the bed and sat in front of Kelly. It was 8:00 in the morning and Kelly knew her mother would be waking up soon. They sat on the floor staring at each other for about ten minutes until Sparky said “could you take me out I really have to go to the bathroom?” Kelly jumped up and grabbed the leash off her desk and hooked it onto Sparky’s tiger print collar and opened the door. She walked past her mom in the kitchen and right out the front door.
Outside in the courtyard Kelly saw her friend Xenia swinging on one of the gliders. She called Xenia over and said “you won’t believe what Sparky can do!” Sparky lifted his head and gave Kelly one of those looks, like are you really going to tell her. Kelly told Sparky not to worry and said to Xenia “He can talk, he really can, listen.” Kelly walked over to Sparky and patted him on the head and said “go ahead, show Xenia that you can talk!” Sparky turned to Xenia and said “can I have that cookie in your hand there?” Xenia screamed and through the cookie at Sparky. Sparky said “thank you!” Startled Xenia cautiously approached Sparky and said “how did this happen?” Kelly replied “I’m not sure; I just woke up and heard him talking in his sleep.” Xenia sat down next to Sparky and said to Kelly “you have to tell someone, this is amazing.” Kelly shook her head no and headed to her front door. Before Kelly could turn the knob Laura opened the door. Laura said “Good Morning” and headed toward Xenia. Kelly poked her head in the door and asked her mom what time it was. Her mom replied “9:00AM.” Kelly said “ok” and told her mom she was going to stay outside with Sparky, Laura, and Xenia. Kelly’s mom told her to get Laura, and tell her to walk Fluffy.
Kelly ran over to Laura and told her to go walk Fluffy and as usual Laura ignored her (typical sister thing.) Kelly told Sparky to tell Laura to walk Fluffy, so Sparky jumped up on the swing and said to Laura “go get Fluffy!” Laura jumped back and stood up. Kelly said “see I told you my dog was smarter than you, he can talk!” Laura started frantically running around in circles and screaming. Kelly and Xenia both told her to be quiet and Laura calmed down. Kelly said you might want to go get Fluffy now, and she ran inside to go get her dog. Kelly asked Xenia what she would do if she realized her dog could talk. Xenia replied “if I had a dog (in one of those annoyed tones) I would tell everyone and become famous. Kelly said “first of all it’s not my fault you don’t have a dog and second of all I don’t want all the publicity.” Xenia shrugged and then there was a long pause.
Five minutes latter Laura ran out with Fluffy. Xenia and Kelly both looked up and said “what took so long?” Laura replied her usual response “I was hungry.” Kelly smiled and said “what should I do about Sparky?” Laura looked up from watching Fluffy and said “well first I would go in there and show mom, because she said she didn’t believe me.” Kelly looked at Laura and yelled “why did you tell mom?” Laura backed away and said “I didn’t know you didn’t want me to tell anyone.” Kelly shook her head in disappointment and said “what were you thinking?” Laura said “I was hungry, I was thinking about food, duh!” Xenia said “I got to go watch my brother and sister (Shinka and Sirus.) Kelly and Laura said goodbye and Xenia went inside. Laura sat down next to Kelly on the Swing and patted her lap; Fluffy jumped up into her lap and lied down. Kelly called Sparky up but he was preoccupied with a squirrel up in one of the maple trees. Kelly told Laura that they should head in. They both stood up and started walking inside. Laura asked Kelly if she would prove that Sparky can speak but Kelly just shrugged and said “you’ll see.”
